Jim Oliver, Esq.

A Tacoma Traffic Attorney
What starts with red and blue flashing lights, and ends with fines, higher insurance rates and possible jail time?  A Tacoma traffic ticket.

It doesn't have to end this way.  Even if you think you may have bent the law, the authorities have the burden of proving that you did what you were accused of.

Here's the kicker, 9 times out of 10 times the paperwork behind your ticket is defective and the whole case should be kicked out of court.  No judge is going to tell you that, but it's true.

Here are the basic requirements of a ticket:  It needs to identify you, the law you broke, the officer who signed it, and the date and place where the infraction occurred and the ticket was signed.

Sometimes the police officer writes the incorrect law on the ticket.  This is usually fatal, which means if your lawyer knows what to say, the ticket will usually get kicked out.  The same goes for when police misidentify the driver on the ticket.

There are a lot of other requirements, too.  The officer not only needs to sign and date the ticket, he needs to indicate where he was when he signed it.  Failure to do so can result in the ticket getting kicked out.  The officer also needs to write a declaration detailing what he thinks you did wrong, and why he thinks so.

For a speeding ticket, the officer needs to explain whether he was using Radar, Laser, or Pace.  If it was Radar, or Laser, the officer needs to identify the unit by serial number.  He must also detail his training and any tests he did with the unit around the time of the infraction.  He also needs to account for the tuning forks (I’m serious) used to calibrate Radar guns.

That’s not the end of it.  Every speed measuring device needs to be regularly calibrated.  This calibration needs to be properly documented by trained professionals.  These documents need to comply with various statutes and case law.

A skilled Tacoma traffic attorney, like me (shameless plug), knows which arguments to make that have the best chances of getting your ticket kicked out of court.  Don’t risk fines, higher insurance, and in extreme cases, jail.  Let me fight your ticket for, whether you think you did it or not.  I've beat dozens and dozens of tickets for people who thought they had broken the law.
